The Itigidi Family Meeting Calabar, earlier today paid a courtesy call on Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, in his office at the Ministry of Education Headquarters Calabar. The group led by its President, Professor Ernest Asikong and other members, congratulated the proactive Commissioner, on his well deserved appointment saying,
“on behalf of the Chiefs, Elders and the good people of Itigidi, we celebrate you following your giant developmental strides in the state education sector, and particularly your antecedents back in CR-SUBEB as the then Executive Chairman, Professor Asikong, remarked.
The group further made passionate appeal that:
1. the Itigidi College of Nursing/Midwifery and Public Health Sciences, be captured under the State Ministry of Education for TETFUND and other interventions.
2. Community Secondary School Itigidi, cannot host National Youths Service Corps Members posted to the school due to the deplorable state of their lodge/guest house, they appealed for the rehabilitation of the lodge, construction of more class rooms and staff quarters.
3. Provision of laboratory equipments, as well as staffing with quality teachers, for there is dire need of Chemistry, English and Mathematics teachers in the Community Secondary school Itigidi.
4. Upgrade of the UBEC Model Secondary School Itigidi, from Junior Secondary to Senior Secondary School as it already have an approved center for SSCE Examinations. Other needs of the school include:
i. The need for solar powered pump to ameliorate the inadequate supply of water for students (due to the high cost of fuel to power the school generator).
ii. Provision of access road to UBEC Model Secondary School Itigidi.
iii. Construction of an Examination Hall to accommodate large number of students at a time in the School.
iv. Provision of gas cookers for the school kitchen, as they only use firewood which delays cooking of students’ meals.
v. Additional staffing of both the teaching and non teaching staff of the school.
The Commissioner, welcomed the Itigidi Family, thanking them for their kind words as he informed them that he understands their challenges as he assured them of Government taking proper action in addressing the issues raised. He finally solicited for their kind cooperation, while reaffirming Governor Otu-Led administration’s commitment to revamp the State education sector to compete with global best standards, also emphasizing his readiness to formulate policies that will consolidate His Excellency’s agenda.
