The Cross River State House of Assembly has paid a surprise visit to the postnatal ward of the General Hospital, Calabar, where lawmakers cleared all pending hospital bills for patients as part of efforts to support mothers and their families.
The visit, led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, was in commemoration of the two years in office. The Speaker explained that the gesture was also a way of honouring mothers for their invaluable societal role. “Our mothers brought us into this world, and, as we mark two years in office, we chose to celebrate them especially. It is also significant because the House is proceeding on recess, and we wanted to leave an impact before the break,” he said.
Ayambem commended the hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMB), Dr. Takin Kenneth, for his commitment to maintaining a clean and welcoming environment. He further appreciated Governor Bassey Otu for his proactive leadership and for ensuring that the General Hospital, Calabar, meets modern standards of healthcare delivery.
In his response, Dr. Kenneth lauded the Speaker and members of the 10th Assembly for what he described as a meaningful and people-centered gesture. He thanked the lawmakers for consistently putting the interests of Cross Riverians first through impactful legislation and acts of service.
