Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Ned Nwoko has announced an X Space discussion scheduled for 7 PM tomorrow, where he will engage Nigerians on his proposed amendment to the Nigerian Data Protection Act, 2023 (SB 650, 2025).
The bill, which seeks to mandate social media platforms and online businesses to establish physical offices in Nigeria, aims to increase tax compliance, create jobs, and enforce accountability among digital platforms operating in the country.
In a statement, Senator Nwoko emphasized the need for Nigeria to take control of its digital space, stating that big tech companies generate billions from Nigerian users without paying appropriate taxes, creating enough jobs, or complying with local regulations.
Key Provisions of SB 650, 2025:
• Tax Compliance: Ensuring big tech companies register and pay taxes, reducing Nigeria’s annual $10 billion revenue loss.
• Job Creation: Generating at least 200,000 direct employment opportunities for Nigerians.
• Regulatory Compliance: Enforcing data protection and cybersecurity laws on global tech firms.
• Accountability: Preventing companies from operating without legal recourse for Nigerian users.
• Content Regulation: Ensuring bloggers and digital content creators operate with verifiable addresses and professional standards.
The proposed amendment mirrors global regulatory efforts, with countries like France, Ireland, and the UK implementing similar policies to hold tech companies accountable.
Senator Nwoko has invited all Nigerians to join the X Space discussion, hosted by @Woye1, to share their thoughts and insights on the bill.
