The Acting Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey has commended the leadership of the Niger Delta Students’ Union Government (NIDSUG) for initiating a campaign aimed at combating social vices among students of tertiary institutions in the Niger Delta region.
Odey made this commendation during a meeting with the leadership of the organization, led by the Union’s President, Comr. Scott Uyiosasere Ogunseri, at his temporary office in the Glass House in Calabar.
He expressed concern over the increasing rate of social vices such as cybercrime, identify theft, and other forms of misconduct prevalent among young people, emphasizing the need to collaborate with NIDSUG and other relevant organizations in addressing social vices.
Rt. Hon. Odey, who encouraged the leadership of the organization to take their campaign beyond the academic environment, noted that their efforts align with the state government’s desire to foster a better society. He assured them of the Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu led administration’s commitment to support them to achieve their campaign’s objective.
Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the delegation and National President of NIDSUG, Comr. Scott Ogunseri expressed gratitude to the Aching Governor for granting the group audience in his office in a short notice and expressed their commitment to support laudable initiatives of the government particularly that affects the students.
He stated that the campaign, set to be flagged-off on March 28, 2025, aims to raise awareness about the danger of social vices including cybercrime, money laundering, cultism, drug/substance abuse, and to promote ethical conditions among student across the Niger Delta region
The highlight of the visit was the conferment of the title Patron and Grand Commander of Niger Delta Students on Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, along with the presentation of an Award of Excellence, in recognition for his unwavering support for youth and student development, as well as his outstanding contributions to student welfare.
Comr. Scott was accompanied on the visit by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Comr. Joseph-Kelvin Eyam, Special Assistant on Students Orientation, Comr. Anthony Afufu, representatives of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) and the President of the National Association of Cross River State Students Worldwide (NACRISS-WW), Comr. Uke David, among others
Also present at the meeting were the Head of Personal Staff to the Acting Governor, Dr. Chris Ojikpong, and other appointees from the Acting Governor’s office.
