The 2027 general elections in Nigeria may seem distant, but political preparations, consensus-building, and strategic alignments are already in motion.
Recently, key political figures from the Cross River Northern Senatorial District united to form a new coalition the Northern Cross River State Coalition (NORTHCCO) positioning it as a formidable force in the state’s political landscape.
Rt. Hon. Legor Idagbo, Chairman of NORTHCCO’s Central Working Committee, has assured that the coalition is not out to target any individual or political group but is committed to reclaiming the Northern Senatorial District following the disruptions of the last election cycle. He emphasized the urgency of unity and collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections, making it clear that NORTHCCO is not exclusive to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but welcomes all Northern Cross River indigenes dedicated to the region’s progress.
Dismissing concerns that the group serves any individual ambition, Rt. Hon. Idagbo recalled a similar political movement in 2010 that supported the re-election of former Governor Senator Liyel Imoke. He noted that this time, the goal is to reposition the Northern Senatorial District for stronger political representation while backing Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s second-term bid and advocating for sustained development projects in the region.
Addressing the coalition’s structure, he clarified that NORTHCCO’s mission is rooted in the political advancement of the North, highlighting specialized committees handling Reconciliation, Needs Assessment, and Sensitization.
Rt. Hon. Idagbo lauded Gov. Otu administration’s achievements in road infrastructure, electrification, education, and healthcare improvements as commendable and worth sustaining.
Regarding funding, he stated that NORTHCCO is not bankrolled by any individual but thrives on the commitment and sacrifices of its members. As the 2027 elections approach, he urged a united front, cautioning against misinformation and distractions.
Expressing gratitude to attendees of the coalition’s inaugural meeting, he reaffirmed that NORTHCCO remains focused on driving progressive change for Northern Cross River State.
