Honorable Samuel Neji Abang, the Minority Leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly and Member representing Ikom 1 State Constituency has demanded the immediate refund of funds from private companies and individuals who have been utilizing state-owned heavy-duty equipment for rental services.
The demand came to light during a recent visit by a special asset recovery committee to the construction site of the Obudu Cargo Airport. Shockingly, the committee discovered that a private company entrusted with the construction project had been renting government-owned machinery back to the state.
Members of the committee were stunned when they found 34 heavy-duty machines in the possession of the private company, while the state government faced a shortage of equipment for essential projects aimed at improving the welfare of the citizens.
Expressing his dismay at the discovery, Hon. Neji Abang emphasized the need for the private company to account for the years the equipment has been in its possession and the profits accrued from renting them out. He stressed that the company must promptly reimburse the state government or face potential sanctions for its actions.
The revelation has raised serious concerns about the management of public resources and the need for enhanced oversight in public-private partnerships. Hon. Neji Abang’s call for accountability has been met with support from fellow lawmakers and members of the public who expect swift action to rectify the situation and ensure that such malpractices are not repeated in the future.
