Governor Bassey Otu has directed the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries and pensions for state and local government workers. The directive comes as a relief to employees and pensioners who faced delays due to an ongoing staff and pension audit and verification exercise.
Governor Otu expressed sincere sympathy for the inconvenience caused by the audit process but emphasized the necessity of the verification exercise. To expedite the payment of February salaries and pensions, the Governor urged individuals with duplicate names and accounts, as previously made public, to report to the Office of the Head of Service for authentication.
Names of those affected have already been forwarded to the relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to facilitate the authentication process. The Governor aims to ensure transparency and accuracy in the disbursement of funds to deserving beneficiaries.
The audit and verification exercise, although causing temporary delays, is anticipated to yield savings. Governor Otu intends to channel these funds towards addressing another critical issue – unemployment. He announced plans to immediately employ a significant number of unemployed Cross Riverians into the State and Local Government Service.
Emmanuel Ogbeche, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, highlighted the Governor’s commitment to both fiscal responsibility and addressing the pressing issue of unemployment. The decision to allocate saved funds for job creation is the administration’s dedication to holistic governance, ensuring financial prudence while simultaneously boosting employment opportunities.
