In just over two years, Hon. Chief Peter Akpanke, Member Representing Obanliku, Obudu, and Bekwarra Federal Constituency and Vice Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and Other Related Matters, has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transformative development. His midterm scorecard is a testament to his dedication to improving the lives of his constituents through impactful, community-driven projects. From education and infrastructure to water, sanitation, and telecommunications, Hon. Akpanke’s achievements reflect a vision of progress and prosperity for his constituency.
Transforming Education and Infrastructure
Education is the cornerstone of development, and Hon. Akpanke has prioritised it with remarkable results. Among his completed projects is the construction of a Community Secondary School Block in Ukpada, Utugwang, Obudu, providing students with a conducive learning environment. Additionally, the renovation of a two-classroom block with offices at Ketting Primary School in Obanliku has revitalised educational facilities, ensuring that young learners have access to quality infrastructure.
Beyond completed projects, Hon. Akpanke has initiated several ongoing educational developments. Classroom blocks are currently under construction in Ububa’iye and Olokpa in Beten (Bekwarra), Begiaba and Kubung-Bette (Obudu), and Bagga in Utanga (Obanliku). A secondary school block in Ketting Village, Obanliku, is also in progress, alongside a mini stadium in Ketting, which promises to foster youth development through sports. These initiatives underscore his commitment to building a solid foundation for future generations.
Enhancing Access to Water and Sanitation
Access to clean water and proper sanitation is critical to community health and well-being. Hon. Akpanke has delivered five solar-powered boreholes across key locations, including Sankwala Market, Obudu Main Market, Abouchiche Market in Bekwarra, Bebuankayang, and Bayaga in Obanliku. These boreholes provide reliable, sustainable water sources, reducing the burden on residents and supporting local commerce.
In addition, modern toilet facilities have been constructed in Sankwala and Obudu main markets, addressing critical sanitation needs and improving public health standards. These projects demonstrate a thoughtful approach to addressing the immediate needs of communities while promoting long-term sustainability.
Illuminating Communities with Solar-Powered Street Lighting
Hon. Akpanke’s focus on improving safety and accessibility is evident in his extensive deployment of solar-powered streetlights. A total of 14 communities, including Ketting, Bendegie, Begiasule, Akorshi, Nyanya, Hausa Quarters, and Bishiri Road in Obudu, now benefit from enhanced lighting. Other beneficiaries include the Obudu College of Nursing Science, Sacred Heart Hospital, and key routes such as PHC Junction to Sankwala Roundabout and Utugbor in Bekwarra. Additional installations by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) along Utuhu to Ranch Road and Bebuagbong to Ukwel-Ubudu Road further brighten the constituency, fostering safer and more vibrant communities.
Bridging the Digital Divide
In today’s interconnected world, access to reliable telecommunications is essential for economic and social development. Hon. Akpanke has spearheaded the installation of MTN 2GB networks across 12 communities, including Bayaga, Bayaleke, Amanana, Kundeve, Yindeveve, Yadoo, Agonogo, Ugugu, Bukuyama, and Omale in Obanliku, as well as Bebuabo, Begiababa, Kutiang, Ashikpe, Bayatung Ukpe, Kogbor (Ukpe), and Okorshie in Obudu, and Ogoja Alege. These networks have connected previously underserved areas, enabling residents to access digital opportunities, communicate effectively, and participate in the modern economy.
Ongoing and Awarded Projects: A Vision for the Future
Hon. Akpanke’s work is far from finished. Several transformative projects are underway, including rural road construction in Bendi and the awarded construction of Atubulum Road in Gakem and Utugwang Market Road. These initiatives promise to improve connectivity, boost local trade, and enhance access to essential services. By addressing critical infrastructure gaps, Hon. Akpanke is laying the groundwork for sustainable development across the constituency.
A Legacy of Service and Impact
Hon. Peter Akpanke’s record-breaking achievements over the past two years reflect a leader who listens to his people and delivers on their needs. His focus on education, water, sanitation, lighting, telecommunications, and infrastructure demonstrates a holistic approach to development. By completing 42 projects and advancing several others, he has set a high standard for public service, earning the trust and admiration of his constituents.
As he continues his tenure, Hon. Akpanke’s vision for Obanliku, Obudu, and Bekwarra Federal Constituency remains clear: to create a thriving, connected, and empowered community where every resident has the opportunity to succeed.
