The Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Theresa Akwaji Ushie, has called for greater support and opportunities for physically challenged women, stressing the need for equal access to education, employment, and leadership. Speaking at the International Women’s Day celebration at the Bekwarra Local Government Council, she urged the community to ensure that no woman is left behind due to physical limitations.
Hon. Ushie recognized the strength and dedication of women in different fields, encouraging them to keep striving despite the difficulties they face.
“Women are the backbone of our society. We play key roles in our homes, workplaces, and communities, and we deserve to be given the same opportunities to excel,” she said. “This day is not just about celebrating our achievements but also about reminding the world that women deserve equal access to education, healthcare, and leadership positions.”
She reaffirmed her commitment to initiatives that empower women, particularly in Bekwarra, where many women contribute to the economy through farming, trade, and entrepreneurship.
“We must continue to encourage and support one another. When women succeed, families thrive, and communities grow stronger,” she added.
Hon. Ushie also urged young girls to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams without fear or limitations.
“No girl should feel that she is less capable because of her gender. The future belongs to those who are bold enough to chase their goals,” she said.
The event featured discussions on women’s rights, financial empowerment, and health awareness, along with livelihood support for physically challenged and vulnerable women. Financial literacy training was also provided. Women from different parts of Bekwarra expressed appreciation for Hon. Ushie’s leadership and her continued efforts to support their well-being.
International Women’s Day is observed every year on March 8 to recognize the achievements of women and push for gender equality worldwide.
