The Cross River State House of Assembly has adopted a motion calling for the urgent evacuation of refuse dumps in Ikom Metropolis. The motion, presented by Hon. Samuel Neji Abang, the member representing Ikom 1 State Constituency and Minority Leader, urges the State Ministry of Environment, the Ikom Urban Development Authority, and the Waste Management Agency to promptly address the refuse issue.
The motion calls for the Ministry of Environment to coordinate and supervise agencies to ensure the immediate evacuation of refuse from major parts of Ikom. It also seeks to secure funding for the Ikom Urban Development Authority to prevent future waste buildup in Ikom Metropolis.
Hon. Abang highlighted Ikom’s importance as the state’s second-largest town, noting its significant economic activities that boost the state’s revenue. He stressed the need to maintain a clean and green environment, especially given Cross River State’s reputation as a tourist destination. The presence of refuse along public highways, including Calabar Road, Border Road, Ikom Town, and Ogoja Road, has become an eyesore, he added.
During deliberations, members reiterated the importance of the state’s clean and green environment, emphasizing the need for continuous funding for urban authorities. The House resolved to issue a two-week ultimatum to the Ministry of Environment to evacuate all refuse dumps in Ikom and report back on their progress.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem shared a personal experience, lamenting the dangers posed by refuse on roads. He recounted an incident where a vehicle diverted from the refuse, leading to the death of a supporter. He urged the House to adopt a strong resolution to evacuate all refuse across the state.
