The Member representing Yala 1 State Constituency and Deputy Minority Leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Odey Brian Wonah has made a passionate plea for the rehabilitation of roads in Yala LGA.
Odey was speaking while presenting a Motion calling on the State Government to complete the abandoned Okuku-Okpoma-Mfom and Yala-Ebo road projects both in Yala 1 State Constituency on the floor of the House.
The Lawmaker informed his colleagues that the contract for the rehabilitation of roads which are about 26 and 6 kilometers respectively had earlier been awarded and work commenced.
He lamented however that the rehabilitation work had long been abandoned by the contractors causing untold hardship for his constituents;
“My people who are mostly farmers are suffering alot. They cannot easily take their farm produce to the market due to the very bad condition of the roads. Sometimes, these food items which are worth millions of naira perish. The roads are impassable especially during the rainy season. In fact they are a death trap Yala is the food basket of the State and so it should be considered for road rehabilitation. The Governor is doing a lot in other Local Government Areas, please let Yala be considered.” He appealed.
Majority of the Lawmakers supported Odey’s motion while reiterating that the importance of good road network cannot be overemphasized. They agreed that the rehabilitation of the above mentioned roads will greatly enhance the socio-economic development of the area.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Assembly Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem, reiterated Governor Otu’s commitment to road rehabilitation and stressed that there was an urgent need to rehabilitate the roads to alleviate the suffering of the people.
The House subsequently adopted the resolution that; the State Government should urgently take the necessary steps to return the contractors handling the roads back to site to complete their abandoned work.
