The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, received the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, Cross River State chapter on behalf of the State Governor His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Otu on a courtesy visit earlier today in his office. The Association Chairman, Dr Iyamah Timothy with his members thanked the Commissioner for standing in for the Governor, stating that the Commissioner did alot for the Association while in SUBEB as the Executive Chairman and they have full confidence in his current office.
The Chairman further highlighted to the Commissioner, the group’s activities, students general performance in Mathematics, seminars and workshops for Mathematics teachers, etc.
The Chairman outlined the challenges faced by the Association as follows:
1. Financial constraints for Organizing of seminars and workshops for Mathematics teachers.
2. Sponsorship of this year’s Mathematics olympiads which is christened Governor Edet Otu’s Mathematics Olympiads (GEOMO) coming up May 11, 2024.
3. Sponsorship of this year seminars and workshops for teachers and educators coming up soon in 2024.
4.To recommend the group to the State Ministry of Education to assist us in the mobilisation of students for our annual Mathematics competition, etc.
The Commissioner, assured them of Governor Otu’s determination in the transformation of the education sector, which His Excellency demonstrated in his recent free WAEC registration for Cross River indigenes, as he further stressed on the Ministry’s readiness to actively participate in every programme of the Association, as mathematics is one of the core subjects in school and will give in all his support, promising to take all their requests and recommendations back to the Governor as they will be duly contacted.
