The Member representing Akamkpa 1 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Okon Nyong Owuna has made a passionate plea for the urbanisation of Akamkpa town.
The Lawmaker had sponsored the Cross River Urban Development (Amendment) Bill 2024 which had passed through the Second Reading stage during plenary.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the plenary, Owuna expressed gratitude to the Speaker and Members of the Assembly for supporting the bill and expressed confidence that Governor Bassey Otu will attend to the yearnings of the Akamkpa people towards the urbanisation of Akamkpa.
” I want to thank the Honourable Speaker and my colleagues for supporting this bill. This is a call for justice and equity. Akamkpa is an old town, its contemporaries have all been urbanised unfortunately it was not captured in the State’s urban development projects in the past. This bill, when passed will be a catalyst to fast track the development of Akamkpa.” Owuna emphasized.
Earlier at the plenary session, Members unanimously supported the bill. They noted, amongst others, that Akamkpa with a large land mass and huge natural resources is a major contributor to the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)of the State and so it should enjoy the same status as other urban towns.
Members further stressed that the urbanisation of Akamkpa will boost economic activities which will in turn improve employment opportunities for citizens.
