LASSA FEVER OUTBREAK: CR LAWMAKERS SEEK URGENT INTERVENTION FOR OBUBRA COMMUNITY

The State House of Assembly has adopted a resolution calling on the Federal and State Governments to take proactive steps towards tackling the outbreak of Lassa fever in Eja Community in Obubra Local Government Area of the State.

The House also wants the State and Local Governments to provide portable drinking water to the affected area to prevent an outbreak of order related diseases like cholera and also improve health education to forestall future resurgence of the outbreak.

The House adopted the resolution after the
Member representing Obubra 1 State Constituency, Hon. Agbor Ovat Dickson presented a Matter of Urgent Public Interest on the outbreak of Lassa fever in his constituency which according to him has claimed one life.

Hon Dickson disclosed that the outbreak has been confirmed by the Federal Medical Center Abakaliki, Ebonyi State and lamented the absence of health facilities to contain the it.

Lending their voices to the matter, the majority of Lawmakers agreed that the situation calls for immediate intervention to prevent more deaths as the disease is highly contagious.

The Lawmakers further stressed that, the deadly disease develops in areas with poor environmental hygiene. They emphasized the need for sensitisation to curtail its spread.

The House acknowledged the efforts of the State Governor so far made towards preventing the spread of the disease but sued for more urgent interventions in the affected communities.
